GUT HEALTH

Did you know?

An average person has approximately 1.5 kilograms of gut bacteria.

The Comprehensive Stool Test is a non-invasive test used for assessing your microbiome from a single stool sample, with particular attention to microbes that cause disease or that disrupt normal microbial balance and contribute to illness.

This test can assist us to pinpoint issues without any guesswork and develop a specific treatment plan, which can help to address issues more quickly and effectively. It can also allow us to easily decide if further medical investigations may be required, such as a colonoscopy.

What is the importance of doing this test?

In the last few decades, DNA analysis has transformed the field of microbiology and gut health testing. The Human Microbiome Project and research around the globe have characterised the gastrointestinal microbiome. More than ever before, we are keenly aware of the health benefits and disease risks brought about by the microorganisms that inhabit the digestive tract.

The gastrointestinal tract houses more than 500 different bacterial species! These bacteria play a key role in digestion, nutrition, daily immune defense, weight maintenance and the risk of developing chronic disease. Some species of bacteria should be found in abundance, while others should be there in smaller amounts.

Many chronic disorders come from digestive problems and inadequate nutrient absorption.

Another main function of the digestive system is to act as a barrier to keep harmful substances from entering the bloodstream.

Over a period of time, the gastrointestinal barrier (or membrane) can become ‘leaky’ due to food sensitivities, poor diet, excess alcohol intake, chronic stress/anxiety, bacterial overgrowth or imbalances, yeast overgrowth, parasites, antibiotic use, and some other medications.

‘Leaky gut’ is becoming increasingly common and can be one of the main causes of food allergies/sensitivities, chronic illness and disease, and autoimmune disease.

The complete microbiome mapping test can provide useful insight into the possibility of ‘leaky gut’.

YOUR GUT IS THE CENTRE OF YOUR HEALTH.

Your ability to digest food and absorb nutrients determines your health, and your microbiome (the bacteria that live inside your gut) are especially important for preventing disease.

Signs that indicate impaired gut health include:

  • Bloating, excessive flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Loose bowel motions, diarrhoea
  • Bad breath, reflux, indigestion, GERD
  • Abdominal pain
  • Food sensitivities and intolerances
  • History of antibiotic use
  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Brain fog, poor concentration
  • Mood disorders, anxiety, depression
  • Behavourial issues such as ADD, ADHD and autism
  • Thrush, frequent yeast infections
  • Skin conditions including acne, eczema and rosacea
  • Muscle pain and inflammation
  • Autoimmune disease

Abnormal intestinal microorganisms in the gut are widely known to cause disease. Research shows a relationship between the gut health and the brain, detoxification and immune systems.

For example, excessive yeast produces toxic substances that can pass through the blood-brain barrier and alter neurological functioning causing ‘brain fog’, behaviour problems, and learning difficulties.

At the clinic, I use functional pathology testing to figure out what is going on in the gut.

Comprehensive Stool testing evaluates beneficial bacteria levels, intestinal immune function, overall intestinal health, and inflammation markers. It detects the presence of pathogenic microorganisms such as yeast, parasites, and bacteria that contribute to chronic illness and neurological dysfunction.
